Brief Summary of the Story:

The story states that the NBA was reviewing an incident that occurred between two players during a game. During the fourth quarter of the game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics, Buck Andrew Bogut was taking a shot and while following through brought his arm down and it caught Celtic Kevin Garnett’s mouth. Garnett responded with an open-handed swipe to Bogut’s forehead. According to the rules, contact above the shoulders results in automatic suspension. Earlier that week, the league suspended several players in an on-count incident between the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns. Immediately after the incident, both Bogut and Garnett received technical fouls. Bogut was ejected because the technical was his second of the game which is an automatic ejection.

Overall Analysis:

The overall attitude of the users leaned towards considering Garnett to have behaved violently with excessive aggression and looking poorly at Garnett as both a player and a person. The posters looked down on the violence and felt it was an unnecessary part of the sport and needed to be reduced or handled. There were actually no posters who felt Bogut behaved in a violent manner.

The minority believed that the incident was not a problem and there was no excessive violence. The posters focused on exonerating Garnett or even praising his intensity and passion.

There were posters on both sides who resorted to verbal attacks at other posters to get their views across.

One interesting section of posters was the group that leaned towards being more critical of the NBA officials and how they enforce rules. Those who thought there was no excessive violence believed that the NBA looking into the incident only made the league look more violent than it really is. Those who thought Garnett was violent found disappointment with the league for not enforcing the rules at a greater rate and not taking stronger action against league violence.

Comments of interest:

This comment reflects the idea that there was no excessive violence but did address the fact that the NBA was trying harder to reduce violence in the game.

watched that game live. bogut should not have been assessed a tech. garnett really didn’t deserve a tech but the league is trying to clean up it image since ron artest and auburn hills.

This comment reflects thought that the incident was excessively violent. It also addressed displeasure with the NBA officials (David Stern referenced) in not being stronger in enforcing rules against violence and an inconsistency with enforcing the rules against violence showing preference to certain players.

I was at the game and Garnett and his band of brothers are not the darlings anymore! First of all Garnett is a classless ####! He wins the Championship and the first thing he can think of saying on NATIONAL TV is Mother F***ER! Yeah I’m sooo glad you one now you can act a fool, cuss and bable on and on with more cuss words. He swung at Bogut, period! He should be suspended, period! The Celtics are now the Bulls of the 80′s and can do no wrong, push everyone around and get away with murder. Stern is in on the fix and Garentt will get nothing. Just watch a Celtics game and watch Garnett cuss EVERYTIME he gets fouled, makes a good play etc. Everything is MF, he’s an idiot and it’s a disgrace to the NBA!

This comment reflects no direct opinion on the violence but simply the displeasure in the inconsistency of enforcing rules.

I’d bet money no suspension will happen. It would mean that Stern is rational and we know that isn’t the case.

This comment reflects thought that there was no excessive violence and that looking into the incident further would only make it appear that there was excessive violence.

I would be very surprised if anything came of this. The referees got it right when it happened. A double-technical, and move on. No one threw punches or anything. Any further punishment to either side would just make the league look even worse.

My Personal Bias:

My personal bias is that I am a believer in the fact that the NBA shows preference to certain players and certain teams based on their popularity and success resulting in an inconsistency with enforcing the official rules of the NBA. I am also not a fan of the Boston Celtics and Boston teams and fans in general. So my attitude towards Garnett is not a favorable one.
